Today Jean, Gib and I had the intension of riding down to Stone Lake, WI. On our saturday ride the trails were in great shape with enough loose snow to keep things cool. There were alot of people out sledding over the weekend. On Sunday it got very warm, in the mid 40's. It was apparent on our ride monday that the lakes had gotten slushy on Sunday. You could see the deep ruts from the ski's. By Monday morninng things had froze back up. The lakes became rough with not much loose snow and the trails were not any better. I noticed early on that my sled was running hotter than usual.
We stopped at intersection 89 at the bottom of our loop on the map. At this stop we decided to abort our trip to Stone lake. Instead it was decided to start to head back towards home. Some of the trails had been groomed and had froze with little to no loose snow. I was constantly looking for loose snow on the edges of the trails.
Today's route covered 39 miles. I'm going to take a week off from sledding because we are at the point that more snow is definitely needed. I saw several spots were the groomer had run out of snow and there were bare spots showing.
Headed out across Round Lake. Only took 3 pics today.
Headed off into the woods. Our stop at intersection 89.
I've logged 830 miles so far this year. We should have another 4-6 weeks of riding left if the weather cooperates. Today, Tuesday, I woke up to -2 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold High pressure from canada.
The Goldfinches stay all winter. We have a flock of about 20 that we see every few days or so.
Thanks for looking and have a great week.
